Influence of stacking sequence on the impact behaviour of UHMWPE soft armor panels

Mechanical behavior of Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) under high-velocity impact is critical for the design soft armor vests. Several types UHMWPE are available with different mechanical properties. However, no validated methodology has been published in literature to analyze influence stacking sequence combining materials maximize ballistic limit. In this work, a combined experimental–numerical proposed predict change limit sequence, and hence find optimum combination. First, FEM model fitted using tests on single layer specimens. Then, comparison 6 sequences. Once validated, used 17 sequences similar areal densities best configuration. conditions studied material highest ultimate strain back face, lowest front intermediate middle. This combination can improve reducing final cost. Conclusions obtained be by composite engineers performance protections.
